Binomials in polynomial ideals can be well hidden. For example, the lowest degree of a binomial cannot be bounded as a function of the number of indeterminates, the degree of the generators, or the Castelnuovo–Mumford regularity. We approach the detection problem by reduction to the Artinian case using tropical geometry. The Artinian case is solved with algorithms from computational number theory.

Decompositions of Binomial Ideals
A binomial ideal in a polynomial ring is an ideal which can be generated by binomials. We present Binomials, a package for the computer algebra system Macaulay 2 (Eisenbud et al (2001)), which specializes well known algorithms to binomial ideals, allowing for a significant speedup of common computations like primary decomposition. Central parts of the implemented algorithms go back to the found...
متن کاملBinomial Ideals
We investigate the structure of ideals generated by binomials (polynomials with at most two terms) and the schemes and varieties associated to them. The class of binomial ideals contains many classical examples from algebraic geometry, and it has numerous applications within and beyond pure mathematics. The ideals defining toric varieties are precisely the binomial prime ideals. Our main result...
متن کاملSome Results on Differential Gröbner Bases
We establish some results in the theory of standard bases of differential ideals (also known as differential Gröbner bases) in differential polynomial rings. This work was stimulated by some articles of V. Weispfenning, devoted to the classification of term-orders and parametric Gröbner bases of ideals generated by monomials and binomials.
متن کاملWhen is a polynomial ideal binomial after an ambient automorphism?
Can an ideal I in a polynomial ring k[x] over a field be moved by a change of coordinates into a position where it is generated by binomials x − λx with λ ∈ k, or by unital binomials (i.e., with λ = 0 or 1)? Can a variety be moved into a position where it is toric? By fibering the G-translates of I over an algebraic group G acting on affine space, these problems are special cases of questions a...
متن کاملHypergeometric Functions and Binomials
We highlight the role of primary decomposition of binomial ideals in a commutative polynomial ring, in the description of the holonomicity, the holonomic rank, and the shape of solutions of multivariate hypergeometric differential systems of partial differential equations.
